Old Art work 2

Alright.. this is the last old work that I'm gonna post... and yes I'm a dragon ball fan but not the hardcore type who collects their toys or perform any cosplay. Anyway, I think I drew these when I was about 13-14 years old. And I start putting colour and drawing full body. These are not really too bad but the proportions are really way off out especially the full body Gohan. His neck is REALLY LONG!!!

Okie thats all for the boring old work... the next post will be the new drawings I did in class.

OH! I've to thank Liz for helping me to scan the drawings (it was quite a lot and the number is still increasing).. cos my thumb drive dies and she has to "REDO" all the scanning.. Thanks Liz, if you are reading. ^_^

CG overdrive day 4 & Video Games Live!

It was the last day of CG overdrive and the first speaker of the day was Mike Seymour, CG Supervisor of LucasFilm. He was talking about how is the workflow for producing a film and showed us some of the technique we can use. He also talked about the RED (brand name) camera that he was using and how it works. After hearing his talk, I find that it is actually quite fun to involve in film production and also doing a lot of problem solving which involves camera shots.

Finally, the last speaker was Norihiko Hibino, President of GEM impact. At first I was not really interested in what he was going to present, why? And that was because he was going to talk about sound effect. I’m an artist; everything I care about is visual. BUT I was wrong! Very wrong! I don’t really understand what he was talking about at the beginning but after he played the theme song of Ninja Blade and demonstrated how to create sound, I was hooked. Working with sound is similar to working with graphics. You need many combinations of different sound to create layers and to come out with something realistic and full of impact. In Photoshop, we create graphic with different layers and sound is the same, they use lots of layers to create a sound effect. When we draw, we need to draw out the FMB (Fore, mid and background) and the producing sound is the same. You need to create a feel of difference in distance and also feel the depth. At the end of the session, he was the one who gets the most questions from the audience and this shows that people are not only in graphic but also into sound production.

That’s all for CG overdrive 2009 and I was very pleased that I’m able to understand more on the CG entertainment industry.

The day has not ended yet! There was still Video Games Live at night!

Video Games Live was the best concert I’ve ever been to in my entire life! It was the concert that I shouted the most! I looked like some girl fans shouting for their handsome idol on the stage! The concert began with a chase scene of pacman and the ghost which was quite funny and followed by music of super nintendo’s games which includes Super Mario, Donkey kong, Gradious, Outrun and Tetris! OMG! It brought back so much of my memories! I just kept shouting whenever I saw some great games that I played before!

There was many more sound track of famous games such as, Metal Gear Solid Series, Halo, Warcraft, Sonic the Hedgedog, Mario Brothers, Crono Trigger/Cross, Legend of Zelda and many more. There was a guy (I forgot his name) who was famous for playing music of Super Mario on a piano BLINDFOLDED! He actually demoed it on the stage and he was amazing! His finger was real fast while playing the piano. His video clip has over 40 millions of download on Youtube.

Of course the best part was the encore! They played one of the best oldies CASTLEVANIA! Also the most wanted song of the entire stadium, FINAL FANTANY 7, ONE WINGED ANGEL!!!!!! Everyone was shouting like crazy! I was a marvelous night and if they are going to perform again some where near Singapore (maybe KL) I might consider traveling to watch the concert again.

For those who missed it, too bad. You have to wait a little longer for them to get be back again.

CG overdrive day 3

Today is the 3rd day of CG overdrive and I'm looking forward to the session with Jeremy Cook, Creative director of Possibility Space. Guess what... I was late!!! I worked till 4am in the morning and I forgot to set my alarm. When I wake up, it was already 930 and by the time I reached expo, its almost 11am... I missed half of it!!! Argh!!

Anyway, I'm not sure if Cook or Ryan Church (please let me know if you know who)is the one Feng Zhu mentioned that he beats all 2D artist including himself. If it was Cookm then he was the designer of Optimus Prime in the transfer movie. At first, when I look at Feng Zhu's designs of Star Scream, I was amazed because, he can draw and design it within a few hours. BUT, cook completed the design of Optimus Prime in 3D in just ONE DAY! This includes, designing, modeling, texturing, rigging and even transformation! OMG!!! 2D artist will have to draw everything again if you need to look at it with a different pose, but with 3D, he can do whatever he wants with just a few clicks..... My jaws dropped when heard about it.... It will take me one day just to get the head modeled. Cook also showed us some of the techniques on modeling in 3D and also doing texturing in Photoshop. It looks fantastic and I really feel like taking modeling as my specialization....

The second speaker was Craig Mullins, an Illustrator from USA..... Er.. That’s all for his profile... hmmm... That’s it? Yeah, that’s it. I thought that it was really weird when there was no history and description about him. However, after the session, I can confirm that his Art sense has already surpassed what we consider art. When I asked my friend what is art, some of them actually told me that Art is something that you do not understand. Today, I finally see an artist who is producing art work that is above everyone else. He mentioned something like “Creativity is not to be creative; a good composition is no composition.” I was like…”What!?” all along John (my lecturer) is teaching us about composition and be creative and now Mullins said such things which does not really make sense. Throughout the entire session, I was struggling to understand what Mullins was talking about but with second thought, his level is already far above us. This shows that I still have a really long way to go.

The last speaker of the day was Lee Stringer, CG supervisor of LucasFilm Animation Singapore. He talked about how they created the animation series of Clone Wars on TV and the procedure of producing animation. He also showed us the Office in Singapore and WOW! There are more than 100 of them in the animation department!! After seeing this, I believe that getting in to work in the company is not really so tough, but to be the best and excel from there… It’s not gonna be a smooth ride. Well.. to be the best, I must first try to push myself to be better than others around me (healthy competition of course), if I can’t, then I can forget about moving up in my career.

Ganbatte everyone! Last day tomorrow! :(

CG Overdrive Day 2

The 1st speaker of the day was Allan McKay, VFX supervisor & Fluids Specialist of Catastrophic. He created the visual effects of films such as Superman returns and Blade Trinity. He demonstrated some of the splash and fire effects using 3dmax and he made it look really easy. However, I still prefer modeling and concept drawing... hmmm.. let's see how things develope after a few months and then I'll decide which path i'm going to choose.

The second speaker was Gio Corsi from Lucasfilm Singapore. He gave a talk about how we can get into the gaming industry and his experience on the gaming world and I love this session! It is always my dream to be in a gaming company to work on some of the coolest games. I'll be looking forward to the day I graudate and see if I have a chance to get into a gaming company.

The last and the best part of the day was from Skan Srisuwan, an instructor in FZD (Feng Zhu Design) school of Design. He demonstrated digital painting during this session. It only took him only 2 hrs to produce a fully rendered image from scratch. This is really very useful for my colour studies and digital painting lesson at the later of the year. I have already started to use some of this technique to work on my "Fairy tale" colour study painting. It does not really look good now but at least I roughly know how it works and I will keep working on it to improve my skill.

Alright! Day 3 tomorrow. YAY! ^_^

CG overdrive Day 1

Today is the first day and my first time at CG Overdrive. I'm extremely happy because this is the first time in my life that I have so many people around me who loves and have passion in art. I gain lots of motivation just being around these people.

Today's talk was about education in arts/designs and also a new software called Fractured (still in production).

The first speaker was Alex Alvarez (founder of Gnomon). He talks about his experience of being an artist and setting up a school which trains artist/designers. It was a very motivating talk as he told us how difficult it was during his time when he was trying to get into this industry. He also mentioned about the education system in US (maybe even the world) is killing creativity.

It reminds me of Sir Ken Robinson (Alvarez also mentioned about him during the talk). He is an internationally recognized leader in the development of innovation and human resources. His view about "School killing creativity" is very true and I totally agree with him. You can visit the video link here and you will know what I mean. Alvarez also said that when he was young, he was not really good in studies and dropped out of school. In addition, he wasted a few years in art schools in US which does not teach him what he wants. However, he still managed to get a job as an intern in some company (can't remember which one) and he build his career from there and soon founded Gnomon. He told us that there are students who are in their 60s and wanted to change his career as an artist. After graduating from Gnomon, the student became a Art supervisor. I find that this is very encouraging as age is not a problem who has a passion in Art. If you want it, you can do it. Of course, the earlier the better.

The second speaker was Kevin Mannens (Senior Technical Director of Sony Pictures). He is developing a software called "Fractured" which endable us to create the animation of demolishing buildings, exploding walls and breaking glass with just a few click. This is simpily amazing as it will cut down massvie amount of time for animators to animate every single piece of fragments which falls out from the collision. Although it was a very techinal talk and most of us could not understand, I am much more fortunate as I have been through some training which is kinda related to what Mannens was talking about.

Overall, it was a great day for me. Ready for day 2!!! ^_^

My old art work

These are some of my old drawings that I drew when I was a kid (when i was around 12 or 13).... they really look horrible and I'm quite reluctant to put it up.. but well, have to upload them to see if I'm improving... please bear with me...
